It might be fine if I were placed it at one end of a football stadium and ran a really long lead to the other end but in my house it rattles the windows as soon as the master volume is turned above two. Why is my Blues Deluxe so damn loud? It seems that Fender, for whatever reason, installed a linear-taper potentiometer in the Master Volume position. Trying to stay on the right side of geeky here. A potentiometer or pot is a variable resistor. There are two types of pots used in these things. A linear-taper and a logarithmic log or audio taper. The taper determines the resistance at any point in the rotation as you turn the volume or tone knob.

Bigsby Paul Bigsby is generally considered to be one of the great steel guitar manufacturers. He’s also famous for being one of the first builders of electric solidbody guitars, as well as for the vibrato mechanism seen on Gibson, Gretsch, and many other guitars.
His steel guitars were played by Joaquin Murphey, Speedy West, and many other famous guitarists of the day.
This is my Fender Blues Deluxe amp. It’s a beauty. I’ve had it for years and I love it. It’s full of Fender. Really, there’s so much Fender in here that it bursts out in sparkly loveliness whenever I plug in a Strat.
Life and career[ edit ] Early years — [ edit ] Neil Young was born on November 12, , in Toronto , Ontario. Shortly after Young’s birth in , his family moved to rural Omemee, Ontario , which Young later described fondly as a “sleepy little place”. In , upon returning to Canada, Young moved from Omemee to Winnipeg for a year, before relocating to Toronto and Pickering.
Young became interested in popular music he heard on the radio. His mother asked for a divorce, which was granted in Very thin, very tall, with a greased-back D. He had a transistor radio, white bucks, a nice sweater, black pants. He idolized Elvis Presley and later referred to him in a number of his songs. It was there that he formed his first band, the Jades, and met Ken Koblun.
While attending Kelvin High School in Winnipeg, he played in several instrumental rock bands, eventually dropping out of school in favour of a musical career. The band played in Fort William now part of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario , where they recorded a series of demos produced by a local producer, Ray Dee, who Young called “the original Briggs”.

The legacy of their craft and the contributions they made exceed the merits perceived in their time, and they established the criteria by which all string musical instruments are measured today. But one might suggest that Loar was just a cut above the rest. His approach to the science of music to which his patents attest and the acoustical properties of the instruments he created, bear no equal. He was one of the earliest pioneers to amplify instruments electrically, and in his search for excellence, he created a keyboard instrument that would never go out of tune.
Possibly even more important is that this was an electric keyboard whose design was decades ahead of its time.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else? Well I’m not one to leave you out in the informational cold, so here’s something that I use quite often in dating amplifiers and electric guitars. It’s called the “source-date code”, and it can help determine the approximate age of an electric instrument by the date its components were manufactured.
Source-Date Codes On American made vintage gear, the pots and speakers provide an excellent opportunity to date a piece of equipment by referencing their “source-date code”. The source-date code found on pots and speakers gives the manufacturer and date roughly when the components were made. It may have been some time before the part was installed at the factory, but it still provides a good approximation of when the gear was made.

In , I begged my mom for it after coming home the night before from a rock concert. At the time, I understood the ES was vintage, but had no idea that it was just a regular Gibson student model.

The company is famous as the first manufacturer of resonator guitars, which were hugely popular in blues and a bit later bluegrass music. National merged with the Dobro company, another maker of resonator guitars, around to form the National Dobro Corporation. The company began producing electric instruments in the s that included electric guitars, lap steels, mandolins and amplifiers. These pre-war electric instruments are fairly rare today, though the lap steels pop up with some regularity.
The archtop bodies for the guitars were sourced from Regal and then from Kay, but the electronics were developed and manufactured by National-Dobro. National-Dobro was reorganized into the Valco company in Manufacturing of resonator guitars ceased with the introduction of metal rationing in World War II, and the focus was placed on Spanish- and Hawaiian-style guitars and amplifiers.
Starting in , a new serial number system was adopted that allows for reasonably accurate dating of instruments. Valco quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of lap steels, alongside Magnatone, Gibson and Rickenbacker, and the company also sold acoustic guitars with National necks and bodies by Gibson. A number of electric archtop models were sold with bodies by Gibson, Harmony and Kay, but fitted with Valco-made pickups, hardware and necks.
Guitars sold under other brand names, such as Oahu, generally followed Supro stylings. These were fairly plain, understated instruments, however, so in Valco introduced the National model , also called the Town and Country. The solid maple body had ivory-colored binding and a matching plate covering the back.

You can read about it here. But I was never aware that there was a significant variation in the headstocks as well. You can read that post here. The headstock of a is wider and longer than a headstock. The discrepancy in headstocks is in these conversions-all of which have a stinger. One has a bigger headstock than the other.
You can sort of see that the headstock on the left is a little smaller than the one on the right.
